Apple Working On Own Wii Remote For Apple TV Gaming
May 9, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to reports, Apple filed a patent back in November 2006 for a controller device which looks exactly like the Nintendo Wii Remote. It is believed Apple may use this device for gaming through Apple TV.
Apple has been rumored to use its Apple TV platform as a means to push casual gaming, and it may do so with the use of this device.
This is not the first time a company has been linked to something similar to the Wii Remote, as Microsoft was also linked to these rumors a little while back for a new Xbox 360 controller.
The similarities are pretty eerie though when you read the patent.
The controller allows for a connection at the bottom, just like the Wii Remote, for accessories such as cables, memory devices, adapters, etc.
The patent states “The absolute x- and y-positions of [the] remote control can be used, for example, in video games to position a user’s character or to otherwise track the movement of the remote control in a user’s environment.”
“[The] remote control system also can include optional console . Console can have controller that can perform some or all of the processing described for controller.”
“Console also can have one or more connectors to which accessories can be coupled. Accessories can include cables and/or, game cartridges, portable memory devices (e.g., memory cards, external hard drives, etc.), adapters for interfacing with another electronic device (e.g., computers, camcorders, cameras, media players, etc.), or combinations thereof.”
We will have to wait and see if anything is made out of this.
