Bill Would Force ID Checks When Retailers Sell Games
May 9, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - Representatives of the House have proposed a bill which will force retailers to check the ID of people purchasing video games rated M for Mature, or AO for Adults Only. The bill would make the act of selling an M rated game to a minor, a criminal offense.
The bill is known as the Video Game Ratings Enforcement Act.
This would force retailers to check the official identification from anyone who purchases an M rated or AO rated video game.
Any retailer who violates the rule will receive a $5,000 civil penalty.
The bill was created by Rep. Lee Terry, a Republican from Nebraska, as well as Rep. Jim Matheson, a Democrat from Utah.
They stated “Many retailers have tried to develop voluntary policies to make sure mature games do not end up in the hands of young kids, but we need to do more to protect our children.”
Many states have put these laws into place over the past couple of years, only to have them deemed unconstitutional.
There has yet to be any decision on the bill, but more will be coming out in terms of its progress.
