Review Nyko Frontman Wireless Guitar for PlayStation 3

May 12, 2008

dbTechno reviews the Nyko Frontman Wireless Guitar for the PS3 for use with Rock Band and Guitar Hero IIINyko Frontman for PlayStation 3

PS3 Review
Manufacturer: Nyko
MSRP: 59.99
Compatible With: Guitar Hero III, Rock Band

Music games have began to peak as they continue to grow in terms of popularity with the guitar peripheral being the most popular item in the bunch. The problem though is that the guitars that ship with Rock Band and Guitar Hero do not always like to work together properly. Nyko has come out with a universal wireless solution for the PS3 with the Nyko Frontman wireless guitar.

The first thing to note is that the Nyko Frontman is fully compatible with both Guitar Hero III, as well as Rock Band. It has the ability to switch from Rock Band to Guitar Haro III thanks to a switch on the USB wireless adapter dongle which comes with the guitar.

The guitar itself is fully wireless, powered by three AA batteries which run for 80-hours of use. I am not sure about the 80-hours, but we at the dbTechno office have been playing with the guitar non-stop for a few weeks and have yet to change the batteries, so it could be spot-on.

If you have rechargeable batteries, another nice feature about the guitar is that they will re-charge when you connect the guitar to the PS3 with the USB cable, which also comes with the package.

The biggest part about any third-party guitar peripheral is the feel of the guitar. In terms of control and comfort, the buttons respond very nicely. All of the buttons have the exact same spacing as on the official guitars released with the games, so you do not have to worry about adjusting your performances to meet with the guitar requirements.

The biggest difference is with the fret buttons, which feel a bit looser than the official guitars. They are not too loose though to the point where they feel flimsy, it just has a different feel.

The whammy bar on the Frontman feels identical to that of the first-party guitars. The same can be said about activating Star Power in Guitar Hero and Rock Band. For the Rock Band fans out there, the effects bar is also included.

Other notable additions include changeable pick-guard colors. One of the only omissions which can be a hassle for some is that the guitar does not have a dedicated PlayStation Button like on the first-party guitar.

Overall Nyko has put out a great third-party guitar with the Frontman for the PS3. The wireless guitar performs great and feels almost good as the first-party guitars available for Rock Band and PS3. If you want to be able to buy a guitar which works flawlessly on your two favorite music games, this is not a bad choice, especially considering it is cheaper than the first-party offerings.

Final Score: 8.0 dbTechno Recommended!
