Sony PS3 Getting Movie Download Service This Summer
June 26, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - Sony held a meeting in Japan on Thursday morning, announcing that the PS3 will get its own movie download service starting this summer in the U.S. The movie download service will hit the PlayStation 3 in Europe and Japan at a later date.
Sony believes that the launch of the movie download service will help push the PS3 to a broader audience, providing a whole new means of entertainment to owners of the next-gen console.
The PS3 is already the most technically advanced gaming console on the market, as it has the a Blu-ray player built-in.
Sony has been chasing the Xbox 360 and its Xbox Live service for quite some time, as it began to offer movie downloads back in November 2006.
There is not much word yet on what exact movies Sony will be offering through the new download service, but everything will be available right on the PlayStation Store.
Needless to say, those who have an 80GB PS3 may find themselves filling their drives with movies shortly.
Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai stated in Tokyo that “Please expect more from our evolving PlayStation business.”
