WALL-E
PS2 Review
Publisher: THQ
Developer: Asobo Studio
Released: June 24, 2008
It is a rare thing when the PS2 version of game, going up again versions on the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii, ends up being the best release of that particular game. This is actually the case though with WALL-E on the Sony PS2 developed by Asobo Studio.
The character of WALL-E is truly engaging, as you get to check him out in his element in the film. He is a robot that was left to clean up Earth after humans turned it into a huge trash dump. His job is to compact trash, turning it into little cubes. He does this for hundreds of years, before meeting a robot by the name of EVE, sent by the humans to search for life. From there, the adventure begins.
The video game version of WALL-E pretty much follows the exact same plot as the movie, with not too much changing.
For a PS2 game, WALL-E actually looks pretty darn solid in terms of visuals. There is nothing here that is going to blow you away or anything, but the visuals are very polished and well-done.
You will start off by seeing some nice detail in both the environments and the characters. This is then built upon with some decent special effects, as well as animations. Again, this is nothing that will amaze you. But for a PS2 game, there are very few issues to complain of. Everything that is here is well-implemented and looks good.
The same can be said about the audio experience on the PS2 version of the game, as there are many sound clips which have been taken straight from the movie. There are great sound effects, music, and segments of cut-scenes which will have you smiling, good stuff.
For the gameplay, you will find yourself with a more complex version of WALL-E compared to the PS3, and Xbox 360 versions released. You will find yourself controlling WALL-E through most of the game, with gameplay scenarios which vary from platforming, action, and more.
On top of that, you are also introduced to a variety of mini-games throughout the 27 levels that you have to play through. Going beyond the WALL-E stuff, you also get to play some race scenarios with the female robot EVE, also very fun.
Once gamers begin to complete the various levels, they can then rack up some points for finishing everything, which in turn will allow them to unlock secret items. These items range from music, concept art, etc.
WALL-E is a great deal of fun on the PS2, as the game has a lot of polish to it, and plenty of depth to entertain both beginner and more experienced gamers. The game runs in a very smooth manner, and looks good throughout. If you are a WALL-E fan, the PS2 version is a great purchase!
Graphics: 8.0 WALL-E looks great on the PS2, very polished, while not going too over-the-top.
Audio: 8.0 The sound comes straight from the film and does a great job of going from movie to video game.
Gameplay: 8.0 Not much to complain about, plenty of depth and variation in all of the controls, with few issues.
Replay Value: 7.5 There are some nice extras to keep gamers playing more, lots of fun to be had.
Final Score: 8.0
