dbTechno reviews Guitar Hero Aerosmith on PS3Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
PS3 Review
Developer: Neversoft Entertainment
Publisher: Activision
Released: June 29, 2008

Ever since Guitar Hero became such a huge success, the hits just seem to keep on coming for the franchise. Whether it was the release of Guitar Hero II, the 80’s mix, Guitar Hero III, and now Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, gamers have received plenty of content from the guitar-centric franchise. Is this latest release enough to really make you go out and pick it up all over again?

The biggest issue with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is that things are beginning to get a little stale. This, for me, is the second Guitar Hero game I have reviewed in a matter of a month, and the third I have played in under a year.

There is one thing to build on a franchise, but it is a whole different thing to try and saturate the market with that franchise.

With that said, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is the latest game in the franchise, and the first to focus on a huge band. The game freatures tons of songs from the Aerosmith library, as well as others they picked.

If you played Guitar Hero III, you know exactly what to expect because the two games are virtually identical in regards to how they play out. All of the same game modes have returned with the career mode, online modes, and multi-player all coming back for another go.

A lot of the characters and extras from Guitar Hero III have been copied over as well, with the addition of new Aerosmith character models and a few other extras.

The career mode in Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will have you playing through 31 songs in total, with each set made up of 3 songs by Aerosmith, and 2 by different groups. On top of these, you end up with several bonus songs which are from either Joe Perry, or Aerosmith for 40 tracks in total.

This may sound impressive, but when you consider it is a $60 game, and it will be receiving now extra downloadable content it is a bit hard to swallow.

The majority of the songs here are Aerosmith tracks, as the rest are songs which Aerosmith fans will likely enjoy. Some of the songs though, to our disappointment, are covers of the original music, and do not nearly sound as good as if Aerosmith were brought in to do the tracks.

In all though, if you are a fan of the group you are not going to be disappointed here, as there are some great classic and new songs to play.

The entire presentation is pretty similar to the other Guitar Hero releases, but the Aerosmith aspect comes in with the great signature movies of Tyler and Perry. This does give a feel that you are seeing Aerosmith perform, and not just shells of the rockers.

All in all, in regards to difficulty, I would say this is more geared towards novice Guitar Hero players, as the songs, even on the hardest difficulty, will not really challenge the experts out there all that much.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is basically Guitar Hero III with a whole new song list and some new characters to use. Beyond that though everything is back for another go, and since it is priced at $60, it is a bit hard to stomach to be quite honest. If you are a huge fan of Aerosmith, and are not yet sick of Guitar Hero I would highly recommend this release. If you are beginning to grow tired of the franchise and need a break though, you won’t find anything fresh here.

Graphics: 7.0
The character models of the Aerosmith’s Tyler and Perry are solid, nice looking. Just what you would expect from Guitar Hero, and nothing more.

Audio: 8.5 The track list is great if you are a fan of Aerosmith, plenty of new and classic rock songs.

Gameplay: 8.0
The tried and true Guitar Hero formula is back again with no changes, difficulty is not very high though.

Replay Value: 6.0
There is really not much here after the 40 tracks, as there are few big extras and no downloadable content.

Final Score: 7.5
