Sony Hit With Major Lawsuit Over Blu-ray In PS3
August 29, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) – Sony is being hit with a lawsuit over its use of Blu-ray in the Playstation 3 (PS3), as the company is being sued by Orinda Intellectual Properties, based in California.
The lawsuit states that Sony is at fault for violating their patent, filed in 1995 by Hyundai Electronics Industries, which states the creation of “an optical disk-shaped recording medium comprising a plurality of tracks”.
Orinda has requested that Sony stop producing and selling Blu-ray products, the most important of them being the Playstation 3. They are looking for a royalty fee from Sony for all previous sales of Blu-ray enabled products.
The lawsuit will be heard by the Federal Judges of East Texas. This is the same judges who ruled against Nintendo last year over the violations made by Nintendo and the use of motion-technology used in the popular Wii and Gamecube controllers.
Nintendo paid out $21 million to Anascape Ltd. over the ruling.
Sony is hoping to avoid a similar outcome to their current situation.
