Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
Xbox 360 Review
Developer: Midway
Publisher: Midway
Players: 1-2 (2 Online)
Mortal Kombat is a series that just doesn’t seem to ever go away due to the constant innovation and work put in by Midway. The franchise has been around for years, and keeps going strong as one of the best choices for fighting fans on any platform. Does this remain true though for the latest entry, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe?
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is probably the most enjoyable Mortal Kombat game I’ve played due to the fact that the new gameplay mechanics make for a very smooth experience, allowing you to pull off combos and get into the depth of the gameplay.
The game goes back in time in a sense as it feels much more like an old-school Mortal Kombat fighting game in the way in which you can pick-up-and play it, or sit there and really get into the depth of it.
The pick-up-and-play style is going to appeal to the casual gamers out there, but those hardcore fighting fans are going to love the depth that is unlocked once you get into the move list with the various combos and such that you can pull off to deliver some incredible damage.
Speaking of incredible damage, do not forget about the fatalities, which have been given not only to the Mortal Kombat characters, but also to the DC fighters added into the game.
I was a bit nervous when I heard that DC fighters were going to be added in, but the develop did a great job of allowing them to seamlessly join the fighting game without making it seem like a gimmick at all.
The gameplay also does a nice job of tying in with the levels and such where you fight. There is some nice interaction as you can punch enemies through walls, and well as compete in the more classic multi-level areas for fighting.
When you get into the story mode of the game, you can pick a side as to whether you want to go with the MK or DC characters, and from there you can watch the story unfold. With two different endings, it is a lot of fun to play through to say the least.
There is also your standard arcade mode for those not all that interested in the story, online multi-player, etc.
Visually, this is a good looking fighting game with some nice details and such on the characters. The biggest issue I have with the visuals though, which also ties in with the gameplay, is the flow of the animations, which come across a bit too jumbled for my liking.
The audio is respectable in that you get some decent dialogue in the story mode, along with some quality sound effects and fighting soundtrack. Nothing really over the top here but there is also nothing that ruins the game.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is a quality fighting game which fans are surly going to enjoy. Playing as characters such as Superman, The Joker, and Batman definitely add to the whole Mortal Kombat experience as they are tied in nicely with the MK fighting style. This is a quality fighting game which fans of the franchise and the genre in general will enjoy.
Graphics: 8.0 The animations could have been improved a bit more, the game looks good though.
Audio: 7.5 Pretty standard sound, decent voice acting, it gets the job done.
Gameplay: 8.0 There is a great deal of depth to the gameplay, an enjoyable fighter with nice combos and level design. The animations harm the experience a bit though as the flow could have been better.
Replay Value: 7.8 If you enjoy the game there is plenty of replay value in the online play and single-player play.
Final Score: 8.0
