PS3 Review
Manufacturer: Sony
Platform: Sony PlayStation 3

Sony has released a new toy for PS3 owners in the form of the PlayStation 3 Wireless Keypad, which is an add-on for PS3 users that will go a long way in helping communicate over PlayStation Home, PS3 online games, etc.

The new device is a QWERTY wireless keypad which works nicely for what it is supposed to do.  The device allows PS3 users to enter text much faster than using just the PS3 controller, and also introduced touchpad functionality as well.

The device fits right on top of either the DualShock 3 or the SIXAXIS controller, so no worries no matter which control you have.

The new keypad covers the PS, Start, as well as the Select buttons, but replaced them with its own versions of the buttons which are raised a bit.

Once you get past that, there is the full QWERTY keyboard spread for you to check out.  There are also short cut buttons to allow you to quickly send messages to friends and stuff, a nice feature to say the least.

The biggest issue I had with this controller though is the fact that the keypads are tiny, and do not do a very good job of giving you a response when you hit them, meaning it is very easy to have some typos as you go along.

The only other minor issue is that it has its own battery, meaning you will have to remember to charge this on its own.  On the other hand though, it also will not drain the battery of your controller.

The touchpad functionality comes into play when you hold down a button, turning the entire keyboard into a touchpad basically.  If you get the hang of it, this feature actually does work well, but is not as accurate as I would have liked.

Regardless of the few complaints, this Bluetooth wireless keypad for the PS3 is definitely worth picking up, as it is nice to be able to easily send chat messages over the PS3 network to friends, within games, etc.  The $50 price tag may seem a bit steep, but if you play a lot of games online, it is worth the price point.

Final Score: 8.2

Just to point out you don’t have to hold the touchpad button - press it once for on and once for off. Also did you read the instructions and calibrate the touch pad? I found it gave a noticable improvement after calibration.

Speaking of holding buttons - I like how the shift, blue and orange buttons remember the press and apply it to the next press - so you don’t need to hold multiple keys so can just use your thumbs - just press it once and it will be applied to whatever you press next (be careful not to press shift and then press backspace though as this clears your message!!!)

It’s small but just the right space for ‘thumb typing’, being QWERTY and being able to touch-type I find it quite quick and natural to type out a message with my thumbs. Certainly miles better than the horrible on screen version!!! Suppose it depends on how fat your thumbs are though, and whether you’re a touch-typer or a hunt-and-pecker!
