Avalon Code
Nintendo DS Review
Developer: Marvelous
Publisher: Xseed Games
Released: March 17, 2009
Avalon Code is an extremely unique RPG experience on the Nintendo DS, one which combines a very interesting story with some enjoyable gameplay elements.
The game is a very enjoyable experience on the Nintendo DS in all regards, whether you look at it in terms of the graphics, audio, or gameplay.
The developer here, Marvelous, has done some great things with the Nintendo DS hardware, as you get some very nice use of colors, character models, and animations.
The same can be said for the audio presentation in the game, with the soundtrack really taking the cake here as it fits the whole experience well.
The truly unique aspect of the game though is the way in which the gameplay plays out. For your arsenal, you have both your battle skills, as well as the Code.
Basically, the idea behind the game is that the whole world has been wiped out, with very little left.
So basically, whatever is left, you have the ability to use the Code to manipulate it. If you are facing a boss that has a shield of some kind, you can use the Code to take down the shield, altering the monster.
This can work both in your favor and against you at the same time if you use the Book of Prophecy the wrong way.
The way in which this all plays out carries with it a lot of enjoyment, as well as a lot of depth. The depth comes in the fact that you are going to have to learn how to work through this book to get to the codes that you need at the times you need them.
The way in which you can go through everything though makes for a very unique RPG experience overall.
You will have some help with the book along the way as you will be able to be guided by these spirits who explain how it all works, giving you hints when you need them.
There are more strategic restrictions here as well, as you can only hold a certain number of codes at one time for characters.
As for unique qualities of the DS, the main controls are done with the D-Pad and face buttons, while the touch-screen is used to flip through the book to check out codes.
Overall, Avalon Code is a very unique RPG experience on the Nintendo DS, and one that you will not regret jumping into. Using the Book of Prophecy is a joy and will present you with something very fresh. For RPG fans, Avalon Code is not one to be missed on the Nintendo DS.
Graphics: 8.2 A great looking Nintendo DS game with a very detailed world, animations, etc.
Audio: 8.0 I am a huge fan of the soundtrack here, sets the atmosphere nicely.
Gameplay: 8.2 Scrolling through the book can be a bit tedious on the touch-screen. Overall though extra points for being very unique.
Replay Value: 7.8 As long as you allow yourself to get into it, this is one deep RPG.
Final Score: 8.0
