Backyard Baseball 2010
Wii Review
Publisher: Atari
Released: March 2009
Atari has come out with Backyard Baseball 2010 this year, aimed once again at its target audience of young baseball fans on the Nintendo Wii.
Backyard Baseball has always been a very enjoyable franchise, despite the fact that it has never really been seen as a major success in the eyes of the critics.
With that said, the sales do not lie as it is clear that this is a popular game for the young gamers out there, and this year is no different.
Backyard Baseball 2010 is a very enjoyable baseball game for young Wii gamers who may not be advanced enough to take part in a simulation baseball experience such as MLB 2K9.
The game features many MLB players headlined by none other than David Ortiz from the Boston Red Sox. Upon starting the game, you can do things such as choosing your team just as you would as if you were back in middle school.
You can also have a decent amount of options such as having the game announce your player name and such.
In terms of game modes, there is some pretty standard stuff here, enough to keep the kids occupied for a good amount of time. The more you progress, the more players and such you will unlock.
The graphics and audio are not up to par with what you would expect on the Wii, as the game lacks textures, and really could have benefited from some added animations and a more colorful presentation.
The gameplay here is simple enough, and will be very accessible to the younger games as hitting and pitching do not require much accuracy to be successful, just proper timing.
For kids between the ages of around 5 and 10, Backyard Baseball 2010 will be a good choice to introduce them to a baseball video game, without overwhelming them right off the bat.
Backyard Baseball 2010 is not perfect by any means, but it does do a respectable job of appealing to its target audience.
Graphics: 5.0 Not even considered good by Gamecube standards, but everything runs smooth.
Audio: 6.0 The commentary gets rather repetitive, sound effects are pretty bland.
Gameplay: 7.5 Controls work well, and will appeal to the younger target audience.
Replay Value: 7.0 Some decent stuff here to keep the younger games occupied.
Final Score: 6.5
