PS3 Review
Publisher: Activision
Developer: Radical Entertainment
Release: June 2009

Prototype kicks serious butt, without a doubt, and is the type of game that many superhero movies wish they could have tied to them. Released on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, Prototype may just be the standard for superhero games moving forward.

Prototype is what superhero video games are meant to be by the time they hit the shelves, only this one is not based around a big blockbuster film.

You play the role of Alex Mercer, a mean who is out to make his mark in the world, and seeks revenge.

The game kicks off in a morgue, with Alex waking up from death with new abilities to withstand bullets, leap tall buildings, etc.

This is your typical superhero set-up, and to be honest may bore some, but the fact that it is somewhat original and not based solely around a movie is fun in itself.

The game looks fantastic, with some great detail put into the main character, enemies, as well as the areas. The level of detail in some of these areas you will be doing damage will truly showcase the power of the PS3 and the other next-gen console, the Xbox 360.

There is plenty of violence here, so expect a lot of special effects with great particle effects in the blood spattering, lighting textures, etc.

The audio is equally as impressive with a great musical score to go along with the in-your-face gameplay, as well as crisp and original sound effects.

The real fun here outside of the story is playing an original superhero game with some very enjoyable gameplay elements.

It is an absolute blast controlling Alex Mercer, you will have fun playing as him and doing some serious damage.

The way the gameplay is set up puts you in this virtual playground, where you can pretty much take on every scenario with Alex Mercer in your own way.

If you want to go head-to-head with enemies, taking them on without flinching, you can. If you want to be more tactical, you can do that as well. The world is at your fingertips, and the gameplay is where this one takes over.

Mercer has some very cool abilities, where you can spawn weapons out of your body, heal yourself, etc.

If you are not about spawning things out of your own body, you also have the ability to take the weapons of your enemies through straight-up combat.

Alex Mercer is a kick-butt character that can do some serious damage through stealth, or sheer muscle.

The great thing about the game is that there are plenty of options in terms of the combat.

If you really want to cynical, you can drop people from the top of a high-rise and watch them fall all the way down, splattering beneath you.

This is a sick and dark game when you break down the combat that is presented in it, lending to an experience that is an absolute blast to behold.

My only issues with Prototype is the fact that first off, there is only the offline component, and secondly, there may not be a whole lot of reason to play through it twice.

Regardless, Prototype is an absolute blast to play through, and one which fans of superhero games will love. If you want an in-your-face action-adventure game, Prototype is it.

Graphics: 8.9 A beautiful looking game that runs at a blistering pace with amazing effects.

Audio: 8.5 The musical score is top-notch, nice use of sound effects to present the action as well.

Gameplay: 8.5 This is where the game shines, an open experience that lets you do damage when you want, and how you want. If you are the creative type, you can waste enemies in more ways than you can count.

Replay Value: 8.0
A polished and lengthy single-player experience, lack of online is lacking though.

Final Score: 8.6
