New Vaccine May Cure Cocaine Addiction
January 3, 2008
Seattle (dbTechno) - Scientists at Baylor College of Medicine has developed a new vaccine which could help cure cocaine addiction.
Two scientists, Dr. Tom Kosten, a psychiatry professor, and his wife Dr. Therese Kosten, a neuroscientist and psychologist, has been working on the vaccine to cure cocaine addiction for 10 years.
The way in which cocaine addicts are currently treated is with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as Motivational Therapy. This will all be changed now with this new vaccine though.
Dr. Kosten stated “For people who have a desire to stop using, the vaccine should be very useful. At some point, most users will give in to temptation and relapse, but those for whom the vaccine is effective won’t get high and will lose interest.”
Dr. David Gorelick of the National Institute on Drug Abuse stated “Addiction vaccines are a promising advance, but it’s unlikely any treatment in this field will work for everyone. Still, if they prove successful, thy will give those working in drug addiction an important option.”
