FDA Denies Women Access To Bio Identical Hormones
January 9, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - The Food and Drug Administration has put a new policy in place which will deny hundreds of thousands of women access to bio-identical hormones.
The FDA sent letters warning pharmacies of compounding across America.
The FDA stated that they are going to put a stop to compounding of medications which contain estriol. Estriol is an estrogen which is produced by the human body. It is the most commonly prescribed hormone and is usually one which is compounded with bio-identical hormones for women suffering from menopause symptoms.
The FDA stated that pharmacies may not use the term “bio-identical” to describe or characterize compounded hormone therapies.
L.D. King, executive director of the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists stated that “Under this policy, patients will suffer while Wyeth profits. Thousands of doctors are making patient-by-patient decisions that compounded hormones are medically appropriate, sometimes because Wyeth’s products are found to be ineffective or produce side effects. This is a decision that should be left to doctors.”
Pharmacy compounding is a practice which has gone on for a long time as millions of Americans need certain types of treatment, requiring the compounding.
