Sugar Free Gum Linked To Severe Bowel Problems

January 11, 2008

A new study has linked too much sugar free gun chewing to severe bowel problems due to a sweetener used in the sugar free gum, sorbitolBoston (dbTechno) - A new study has linked too much sugar free gun chewing to severe bowel problems due to a sweetener used in the sugar free gum, sorbitol.

German doctors have found that having too much sorbitol can lead to symptoms such as abdominal pain, severe weight loss, and chronic diarrhea.

They have put a warning to people who chew excessive amounts of sugar free gum as sorbitol is a common sweetener used in the gum.

The study was published in the British Medical Journal and stated “Our cases demonstrate that sorbitol consumption can cause not only chronic diarrhea and functional bowel complaints, but also considerable unintended weight loss - about 20 percent of usual body weight.”

The men and women who had the bowel problems saw them disappear just after they stopped cosuming the sugar free chewing gum.

The small intestine apparently has a lot of trouble digesting sorbital, also known as E420.
