Saliva Test That Detects Breast Cancer In Works
January 13, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - Researchers in Houston are currently working on a new test to diagnose breast cancer. The test is simply a saliva test.
A study was published on Thursday by a team at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
A dentist led the team and stated that a specific protein marker or markers in saliva can help identify people with breast cancer cells, making diagnosis as easy as going to the dentist or a physician.
Dr. Charles Streckfus stated “This will be a non-invasive, quick means of detection. With it, dentists will be able to catch cancers before a woman can feel a lump.”
Dr. Leonard Lichtenfield of he American Cancer Society called it a “terrific advance.” It is clear though that the test is still in its preliminary stages.
The test will be used along with other tools, not in replacement of them. The tests will not be able to figure out the location of cancer, but it could save women from getting advanced testing and could be a pre-cursor to advanced diagnosis.
