The report coming from the state is that the number of obesity surgery operations has gone up, but the number of deaths from them has dropped.

A new state report has revealed that in 2006 there were 3,447 obesity surgeries performed in the state of Massachusetts. This is up from the year 1998 when only 200 of these operations were conducted. It is also a big increase just in the last few years.

The procedures are becoming more and more common as they are used to reduce stomach size and change the digestive track to help people lose weight.

According to reports Massachusetts has a heavier and older population, but thanks to the improvements in the surgical staff at many hospitals, the deaths from these operations continues to drop.

The gastric bypass surgery is the most popular as it makes up 93% of all weight-loss operations.

A statement from Dr. George Blackburn of the Best Israel Deaconess Medical Center stated that 1 in 10 adults in the US are eligible for the weight-loss surgery, but not enough are getting it.

This is likely the case outside of Massachusetts as well.
