NYC Pushing For Calorie Amounts On Fast Food Menus

January 22, 2008

New York City's Board of Health is pushing to make it mandatory for restaurants to include the amount of calories in fast food restaurants on the menusNew York (dbTechno) - New York City’s Board of Health is pushing to make it mandatory for restaurants to include the amount of calories in fast food restaurants on the menus.

New York City officials are preparing a vote would could force 10% of New York City restaurants to add calorie amounts beside each food item on a menu.

The city Board of Health is pushing through the vote as they want all fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, and others to abide by this new rule.

Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden stated “The more fast food people eat, the more likely they are to become obese. Some people may choose to ignore the calorie information, and that’s totally fine. But other people will use it to choose healthier food.”

The new regulations would go into effect as of March 31st if the vote passes.

Frieden stated that “I don’t think we’re going to see the 2,700-calorie appetizers that we see now.”

This follows the trend for New York City as they were the first to place a ban on trans fats in prepared food in restaurants such as these fast food locations.

It is hopeful that by putting the calorie amounts on the menus, consumers will be able to make healthier choices at the fast food locations, thus cutting the obesity rate in the city and abroad.

I think it is great for private companies to post Calories on the food they sell.
I think it is horrid for the government to require it. Big brother needs to “butt out.”
I also think it is silly to think that obese people will be impacted by having the Calories listed for them.

People do not wake up one morning and find themselves suddenly obese. They get that way one pound and one dress or pant size at a time. As they cross those clothing size barriers, they make willful decision to increase their clothing size rather than decrease their plate size. Adding Calorie stats to menus won’t change a thing.

Um, the fact that I’m writing this proves my life, at this exact moment, is worthless, but I wonder if putting a picture of food from a place that only exists on the west coast while talking about something being implemented in New York isn’t somehow inaccurate. Also, what’s a calorie? Furthermore, In and Out makes the best fast food burger ever. Lastly, people who are CR enthusiast are probably just as rediculous as the fatties chomping on three squares of mickey d’s. BALANCE people.
