In Older Adults, Diabetes Rates Rise

January 30, 2008

The number of older Americans diagnosed with diabetes has risen greatly over the past ten years according to reports.Washington (dbTechno) - The number of older Americans diagnosed with diabetes has risen greatly over the past ten years according to reports.

A new study has shown that the number of new diabetes patients diagnosed increased by 23% from 1994 to 2004.

This increase was only for Americans over the age of 65.

Among elderly people, the disease grew by 62% over that same ten-year time period.

The fear is that at the rate diabetes continues to rise and climb, it may end up putting pressure on medical care for elderly at a rate the current health care system may not even be able to handle.

The report has been published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

According to Frank Vinicor of the CDC, “Taken to the extreme, there will soon be too many patients with diabetes to be individually treated and not enough money to pay for it all!”
