Boston (dbTechno) – A new study has found that second hand smoke can actually make the condition of cystic fibrosis worse for patients. Second hand smoke in the form of tobacco and such has proven to be very bad for the health of cystic fibrosis patients.
Researchers have stated that they looked at 812 people in their study. The average age of the people was at 19-years-old.
They all had the condition. The American Cystic Fibrosis Foundation states that 30,000 kids and adults are impacted by this condition each and every year.
Patients who have the gene known as TGFbeta1 has the highest risk of second hand smoke impacting them as cystic fibrosis patients.
What they found was that out of the 812 people they looked at, 188 of them were exposed to second hand smoke regularly.
Researchers were able to discover from this data that lung function of cystic fibrosis patients who were exposed to second hand smoke dropped by 10%. This was compared directly to those patients who were not exposed to the second hand smoke.
