Phoenix (dbTechno) – According to a new study from Germany, the level of stress experienced during the Super Bowl and other big sporting events can increase the risk of chest pains and heart attack in viewers.
The study looked at over 4,000 German heart patients.
They were all examined while they watched World Cup soccer matches.
Researchers found that the rate of heart attacks among men in Germany was three times greater on days when their national team was playing in a soccer match. This was compared directly to days when there was no game.
The results will be published on Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr. Packer Ward, cardiologist at the University of Chicago Medical Center, stated “We’ve known for a long time that emotional stress of many types triggers a hormonal response that can lead to heart attacks, heartbeat, arrhythmia, and other problems. This study is just a natural extension of that.”
Spectators with a known heart condition are being urged to try to stay relaxed during big games such as the Super Bowl or the World Cup.
