Aggressive Diabetes Treatment Leads To High Death Risk
February 7, 2008
Houston (dbTechno) - A governmental diabetes study has revealed that aggressive diabetes treatment, done by forcing blood sugar levels to reach normal levels, can cause a fatal heart attack or stroke, greatly increasing the death rate.
The study was sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
They announced the findings yesterday stating that many patients with type 2 diabetes should stop receiving the aggressive treatment immediately, and start to follow a less-intensive treatment.
The trial looked at over 10,000 people between the ages of 40 and 82. The people were selected from 77 locations in the U.S. and Canada.
Half of the patients were treated with common drugs and the blood sugar was lowered from 7.5% to 7%. When treatment was made more aggressive, the levels went down further.
The group which had the more aggressive treatment though were far more likely to die over a period of four years.
257 died from the aggresive treatment group compared to only 203 from the group which was treated normally.
