California Doctors Oppose Blue Cross Request of Patient Info
February 12, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - California doctors are not happy to say the least with a new Blue Cross letter to health-care providers. The health insurance company, Blue Cross, is seeking information about patients which could lead to cancellations of patients’ policies.
Blue Cross of California is sending out copies of health insurance applications filled out by new patients to physicians.
Blue Cross states in the letter that they have the right to cancel a policy of a health-care member if they fail to give out all type of medical history. These include “material medical history” and “pre-existing pregnancies.”
The letter states “Any condition not listed on the application that is discovered to be pre-existing should be reported to Blue Cross immediately.”
California doctors are not happy though. Dr. Richard Frankenstein, president of the California Medical Association stated “We’re outraged that they are asking doctors to violate the sacred trust of patients to rat them out for medical information that patients would expect their doctors to handle with the utmost secrecy and confidentiality.”
He stated that this may cause patients to withhold information from doctors, which could put them in dangerous health situations.
Blue Cross stated that they are doing it so that they have accurate records.
