Diabetes Study Shows Lowering Blood Sugar Increases Death Risk
February 13, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - A new study has found that lowering blood sugar levels for diabetes patients actually leads to a greater number of deaths and an increased death risk. This completely contradicts past beliefs that blood sugar levels must be kept normal to protect from heart attacks and strokes in diabetic patients.
Dr. James Dudl of Kaiser Permanente’s Endocrine Cliniic in San Diego, along with 77 other researchers, are trying to figure out now how to explain this to the world.
Dudl stated “The question is, are these conclusions generalizable to most people with diabetes? Right now, most of us are saying they are not.”
The American Diabetes Association is telling patients to continue with their medications for reducing blood sugar, and to see a doctor.
Physicians are shocked to say the least and are asking the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to look closer.
Researchers had a clinical trial going for seven years with 10,000 diabetics. They had to put a halt to aggressive treatment of blood sugar levels after 18 months due to deaths.
They found that patients whose blood sugar was lowered to a normal level were more likely to die than those whose blood sugar was lowered only a bit.
