Baby Deaths Caused By Clutter In Cribs
February 28, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to a warning to parents by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, having too much clutter in the crib of a baby, whether it be with too many pillows, blankets, etc. can put babies at risk of harm, and even death.
The agency stated that between 2002 and 2004, there were 241 child deaths, with 40% of them involving cribs. In all of the deaths, the kids were under the age of 5.
The deaths from cribs revolved around pillows, blankets, etc. taking up too much space.
In many cases, the children actually suffocated when they were lying face down.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has stated that less is more in a crib. It is important to lay babies on their backs when they are in a crib, and to keep them free from many blankets, pillows, etc. The less clutter, the better.
They also stated that the sides of the crib and the mattress should never have a gap of two-fingers at any point. Many other accidents occured when babies were trapped by the mattress.
Other deaths and injuries caused to babies were from nursery related products such as car seats, baby carriers, etc.
36 deaths were also related to baby baths and bath seats, as babies slipped out of the seats or tipped forward in the water when unattended.
They stated that babies should never be luft unattended in a bath.
