Herceptin Gets Approved for Breast Cancer in Japan
February 29, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - Roche Holding AG announced on Friday that their drug, Herceptin, has been approved in Japan for early treatment of breast cancer.
The drug has been approved to treat patients with HER2-positive breast cancer.
The announcement from Roche stated that its subsidiary, Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., had received approval from the Japanese Health Authority.
The approval was based off of study results which showed that the drug greatly reduced the risk of death, as well as the risk of recurrence by more than 35%.
These study results were all shown on women with HER2-positive early-stage breast cancer.
HER2-positive breast cancer impacts around 30% of women with the disease.
Herceptin is becoming more and more widely used to fight breast cancer, as it is now used on more than 450,000 patients worldwide.
