Oral Sex and Marijuana Linked To Throat Cancer

Boston (dbTechno) - Researchers at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center reported that throat cancer can be caused by oral sex as well as marijuana use. This is due to the sexually transmitted virus, the human papilloma virus, also known as HPV.

The study has been published in the March 12 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

It makes a connection between oral sex and marijuana use, linking them to the risk of developing throat cancer.

HPV has always been linked to throat cancer, but researchers stated that the risk of it grows as the number of oral sex partners increase, as well as the increased use of marijuana.

Researchers stated that HPV causing throat cancer is most common among younger, married college graduates.

They are continuing to do research to see how marijuana use is more clearly linked to throat cancer, and other cancers of the head and neck.

Researchers stated though that marijuana use can have an impact on the immune system’s ability to fight off a virus.

Sexually active men and women are at risk due to hygiene issues.

Poor hygiene is a major risk factor of contracting a sexually transmitted disease such as HPV.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 50% of all sexually active men and women will have at least one genital HPV infection throughout their lives.
