Washington (dbTechno) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration put out an alert on Tuesday stating that the overuse use of, of the cough medicine Tussionex, which is a prescription, can be fatal.
The FDA stated that they have received many reports from doctors who have been prescribing the cough medicine to patients. They believe doctors may be over-prescribing the medication.
The cough medicine is made by UCB and is not intended for children younger than 6-years-old.
The FDA stated that some people have been found to be taking the medicine too much, more than once every 12 hours.
Health problems and deaths among children and adults who took Tussionex are already being noted, according to the FDA.
Tussionex contains the narcotic pain reliever hydrocodone. This, in high amounts, can kill.
Since Tussionex was approved in 1987, there have been five deaths reported among kids under the age of 6 who took the cough medicine.
The FDA is urging patients to follow the instructions on the prescription.
