March 20, 2008

Researchers have revealed that low folate levels may actually harm sperm in men and women, which could cause miscarriages, birth defects, and moreWashington (dbTechno) - Researchers have revealed that low folate levels may actually harm sperm in men and women, which could cause miscarriages, birth defects, and more.

It has been reported on for quite some time now that folate is highly beneficial to pregnant women to prevent any type of birth defects.

It now appears that the health of their sperm benefits from folate as well.

Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley have come out and stated that they have linked low levels of folate to damaged or abnormal sperm.

The sperm has a much higher risk of having either too many, or too few chromosomes if low levels of folate exist.

The researchers analyzed sperm from 89 healthy men, and asked them about their daily consumption of vitamins.

They found that men who had the highest levels of folate in their systems, also had the lowest number of sperm abnormalities.

The findings of their study have been published in the March 20 issue of the journal Human Reproduction.
