Lilly Readies IDENTITY Trial To Treat Alzheimer’s

March 31, 2008

Eli Lilly and Co. made the announcement on Monday that they are starting a Phase III clinical trial for treatment of Alzheimer's disease.Boston (dbTechno) - Eli Lilly and Co. made the announcement on Monday that they are starting a Phase III clinical trial for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

Eli Lilly and Co. will be testing and studying LY450139 to see if it can slow or stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

LY450139 is a gamma secretase inhibitor. Lilly has stated that the thought process is that if they can block gamma secretase, there will be less formation of amyloid beta.

Amyloid beta is a plaque which aids in the killing of brain cells, and the progression of Alzheimer’s.

The trial will be called IDENTITY, Interrupting Alzheimer’s Dementia by Evaluating Treatment of Amyloid Pathology.

How will this relate to someone with Lewy Body Dementia who has symptoms of Alzheimers? Or is LBD a stand alone dementia hence the lewy bodies that appear in the brain….please clarify the difference. Thank you.

Has to have had some success to get to Phase III. Since I’m a young senior citizen I hope that LY450139 works with minimal side effects. I’ve witnessed with my own family and as a former psychiatric nurse how well the dementia drugs, already approved have benefited those afflicted with the various dementias.
