ACE Inhibitor Proves As Effective As ARB Heart Drugs
April 1, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to a new international study, treatment with an ACE inhibitor is just as effective as other more-expensive ARB drugs. Both are used to help reduce the risk of death, heart attack, and stroke in patients.
The study looked at over 17,000 people, all of whom had coronary heart disease or diabetes.
The study found that there was virtually no difference in regards to those who were treated with the ACE inhibitor, and those who were treated with the angiotensin-receptor blocker (ARB) drug.
The two drugs used in the study included Altrace, to represent the ACE inhibitor, and Micardis to represent the ARB drug.
It is believed that this study could lead to a reduction in the use of ARBs for people of high-risk for death, heart attack, and stroke. This is mainly due to the fact that the ACE inhibitor drug is far less-expensive.
The findings of the study were presented at the American College of Cardiology.
The study results will be published in the April 10 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
