Genetic Variations Lead Certain Smokers To Lung Cancer

Scientists have discovered that genetic variations may make some smokers more likely than others to develop lung cancerBoston (dbTechno) – Scientists have discovered that genetic variations may make some smokers more likely than others to develop lung cancer.

Three different teams of scientists spanning the globe stated that they have discovered genetic variations which put certain smokers at an increased risk of developnig lung cancer.

The research teams were in France, Iceland, and the United States.

The three different studies all ended up finding similar results in the chomosome 15 which has three nicotine receptor genes.

Smokers with two copies of the genetic variation had a 23% increased risk of lung cancer.

Though smoking causes around 90% of all lung cancer cases, only 15% of smokers develop lung cancer.

This research has proven the long belief that there is a genetic link between which smokers develop lung cancer and which do not.

The studies were published in Nature and Nature Genetics.
