April 13, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - On April 5, Malt-O-Meal, a company based in Minneapolis, voluntarily recalled two types of its cereals due to salmonella contamination. The FDA is investigating if the contamination is linked to over 23 reported illnesses due to the same strain of salmonella.
There have been around 23 people who have reported falling ill to the same strain of salmonella found in the cereals. The cases spread over 14 states. Three people have had to be hospitalized so far, but no deaths have been reported.
The cereals included in the voluntary recall are unsweetened Puffed Rice as well as unsweetened Puffed Wheat cereals.
The cereals have been put under the Malt-O-Meal brand name, as well as other brand names.
The other brand names include Acme, America’s Choice, Food Club, Giant, Laura Lynn, Jewel, ShopRite, Pathmark, Tops, Weis Quality, and Shaw’s, and Hannaford.
The products were shipped with a “Best if used by” date between April 8, 2008 and March 18, 2009.
Salmonella symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea, as well as cramps.
Those who have the cereal in their homes are being told to throw the cereal away.
