Weekly Exercise Helps Women Reduce Breast Cancer Risk
April 15, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to a new study presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, 30 minutes of exercise each week helps women reduce their risk of breast cancer.
The study involved over 6,500 women. Around 1,500 women in the exercise study had breast cancer, and 5,000 did not.
The women were asked to fill out a series of questions which asked them about their things such as their exercise routine, diet, and whether or not they smoked.
Researchers found that women who took part in 30 to 150 minutes of exercise each week were 50% less likely to have breast cancer, compared to women who exercised for less than 30 minutes each week.
It was also noted in the study that the length of each workout session was important. Women who exercised for 15 minutes or more per session were 40% less likely to develop breast cancer.
In terms of ethnicity, African-American women who exercised between 30 to 150 minutes were 70% less likely to have breast cancer. All ethnic groups saw a great benefit though.
The study noted that exercising more than 150 minutes each week did not provide extra benefit.
