Glaxo Says Tykerb Reduces Stem Cells Which Cause Breast Cancer
April 17, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to GlaxoSmithKline PLC., a study has found that their cancer drug Tykerb managed to reduce stem cells which cause breast cancer to develop and recur.
A trial involved 45 patients in total. It found that after only six weeks of being treated with Tykerb, the women saw significant tumor regression.
They found that Tykerb decreased cancer-causing stem cells from 10.6% to 4.7%.
The study could open up the possibility of Tykerb being used to help with the treatment of breast cancer and preventing the development of the disease.
The data has been presented at the 6th European Breast Cancer Conference in Berlin, but according to Glaxo, stem cell treatment and technology is still extremely early.
Researchers are confident though in saying that it may be time to target stem cells with breast cancer therapy, instead of just treating the symptoms of the disease.
