Men More Likely Than Women To Suffer Memory Problems
April 17, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to a new study, men are more likely than women to have memory problems, as well as other cognitive issues as they age. These are all symptoms of an early form of dementia.
The new study will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology in Chicago this week.
The study was carried out on 2,000 residents from Olmsted County, Minnesota.
They all ranged in age from 70 to 89-years old.
The study was led by Dr. Rosebud Roberts of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. They followed the participants from 2004, collecting data every 12 to 15 months.
They found that 74% of those who took part were considered to have normal cognitive functions. 16% were found to have mild cognitive impairment (MCI), an early form of dementia. 10% were found to have dementia.
The interesting aspect of the study is that men were found to be 1.5 times more likely than women to have mild cognitive impairment. This means they were more likely to suffer from memory problems, and other symptoms of early dementia.
As the men and women grew older, the men were found to have an even greater chance of having cognitive impairment compared to women. Between the ages of 70 to 74, the risk rose by 12%. It rose by 40% for those aged 85 to 89-years old.
Dr. Roberts called the findings “unexpected.”
