Elan, Wyeth Put Stop To Alzheimer’s Vaccine Trial
April 20, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Elan Corp and Wyeth announced that they are stopping a mid-range clinical trial of a new Alzheimer’s vaccine, ACC-001. The trial had to be stopped due to potentially serious side effects.
During the study, one patient suffered side effects which included skin lesions, possibly being a case of vasculitis. During vasculitis, the patient will experience inflammation of blood vessels.
Elan and Wyeth stated that after they consulted with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, they decided to put a stop to the remaining portion of the trial.
They are now trying to figure out exactly what went wrong with the Alzheimer’s vaccine, as they try to better understand the nature of the side effects.
That particular patient who was hit with the skin lesions is said to now be out of the hospital and is healing.
It is said that this particular Alzheimer’s vaccine is not related to their other Alzheimer’s drug, bapineuzumab in any way.
