Baxter Exec. Says Heparin Contamination Was Intentional
April 30, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - The chief executive officer of the U.S. drug maker Baxter International, Robert Parkinson, has come out and stated that the contamination of their blood thinner heparin, which caused numerous deaths, was done intentionally and not by accident.
Parkinson was on Capitol Hill in Washington on Tuesday hearing testimony and making remarks in front of a congressional subcommittee.
He stated that the contaminant, oversulfated chondroitin sulfate was put into the heparin on purpose.
There were over 80 deaths linked directly to adverse reactions from the tainted heparin. The big problem, according to the FDA and Parkinson, is that the contaminant was so similar to the real ingredients in heparin, that it was near impossible to detect.
Heparin is made in China, which has also been under a lot of fire as many believe that the source of the problems started there.
Chinese officials continue to be defiant though, stating that they were not the source of the problems with heparin.
