Number Of HIV Infections Spike In Singapore During 2007

Washington (dbTechno) - According to the Singapore Ministry of Health, the number of cases of HIV infection has rose considerably in 2007. There were 422 new cases reported in 2007, up from only 65 new cases reported in 2006. The total number of cases of HIV infection now stand around 3,500.
In terms of the diversity of the cases, the ministry stated that 93% of these new cases of HIV infection were in fact male.
More than 50% of these new cases were of people aged between 30 and 49-years old.
Out of the 3,500 cases, there have been nearly 1,150 deaths, with over 800 falling victim to AIDS-related illnesses
The main mode of HIV transmission was found to be sex, with two-thirds being caused by heterosexual sex.
The majority also had late-stage HIV infection when they were originally diagnosed with the virus.
Singapore’s Ministry of Health has stated that it is important for people to use condoms, and get regular HIV testing to try and avoid further cases.
