Boston (dbTechno) – Senate Democrats introduced a new bill on Tuesday which would ban the chemical bisphenol A or BPA from being used in plastics for infants and kids up to the age of 7-years old.
The bill would also forced the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to take a closer look at the health risks associated with the chemical BPA, and what impact it could have on both kids and adults alike.
The bill put forth by Sen. Charles E. Schumer, a Democrat from New York, has been co-sponsored by Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
There have been many conflicting studies in regards to BPA, as some studied have shown it to be safe, while others have shown it to cause developmental problems in infants, among other things.
The FDA and the Environmental Protection Agency have both stated that BPA is safe.
A report from the National Toxicology Program, part of the National Institute of Health, stated that there were many adverse effects on infants and children from the chemical BPA.
Many retailers have already begun pulling plastics with BPA from store shelves, including the likes of Wal-Mart, Toys ‘R’ Us and others, so the ban may not even be necessary once the retail chains finish their own ban of sorts.
