Study Shows U.S. Hospitals Not Prepared For Terror Attack
May 6, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new study, the House Government Reform Committee’s Democratic staff stated that the top hospital trauma centers in the U.S. are not prepared to deal with a terror attack. The study states that even the top hospitals in the U.S. would be overwhelmed by the victims.
The hospital trauma centers were all surveyed via telephone on March 25. They found that none of these locations had the space in their emergency rooms to help treat a huge amount of victims at once.
The study stated that trauma centers would not be prepared to handle a terror attack such as the Madrid rail bombings on March 11, 2004.
This attack wounded 1,800 people, and killed around 190.
The report was put out by the panel’s Democratic staff members and was done so to show the importance of trying to protect trauma centers from Medicaid cuts.
The Bush administration is trying to push through new changes in Medicaid regulation which will go into effect on May 26.
It is believed that the top trauma centers will lose $623 million in federal funding, and another $600 million in state funding.
Currently, the trauma centers stated during the survey they had no ICU beds available, and no regular patient beds to handle those injured badly.
Republicans have opposed this report, stating it is simply a political stunt.
