Smoking Bans Keep Teens From Getting Addicted

May 12, 2008

According to a new study from the Boston University School of Public Health, bans in place in communities help keep teens from becoming regular smokers.Boston (dbTechno) - According to a new study from the Boston University School of Public Health, bans in place in communities help keep teens from becoming regular smokers.

The study looked at communities who who smoking bans, and compared them to communities with no bans at all, or weak bans.

They found that teens who lived in communities with tough smoking bans were 40% less likely to become regular smokers.

The lead author of the study stated that the main reason for this is that teens grow up in these communities knowing it is not sociall acceptable to smoke, thus they are less likely to take up the habit compared to a community where it is a common and acceptable practice.

In communities with no bans or weak bans, teens may be more likely to see smoking as a normal activity, thush making them more likely to take up the habit.

If they grow up in communities where smoking bans are in place and are strict though, they have proven ot be less prone to lighting up a cigarette.

The study noted that the majority of addicted smokers begin smoking before the age of 18, so if they can be prevented from becoming addicted before that age, they will be less likely to be regular smokers later in life.
