O’Connor Makes Plea To Congress For Alzheimer’s Funding
May 14, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - Former U.S. Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor spoke in front of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging on Wednesday, asking Congress to fund research into Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s disease is a denegerative brain disorder which takes a toll on more than 5 million people in the U.S.
She told the Senate of her husband, who also suffered from the illness.
She stated “You may remember that in the early days of my husband’s illness, I often took him to court with me because he could not be left alone.”
She continued by saying that she “retired from the U.S. Supreme Court in 2006 to find a care center for John (her husband) in Phoenix, where two our children live. Many caregivers make similarly difficult decisions each and every day.”
She is asking for Congress to give Alzheimer’s research more funding so that they can slow down the progression of the disease.
With more and more people estimated to suffer from Alzheimer’s, with 1 trillion estimated by 2050, the need to find a way to slow or beat the disease is very important.
O’Connor is leading the pleas to Congress to increase funding to beat the disease.
