Bayer Pulls Supplies Of Heart-Surgery Drug Trasylol
May 15, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Bayer AG has confirmed that they are pulling all remaining supplies of its heart-surgery drug known as Trasylol. This comes following a study which showed it posed an increased risk of death.
On Wednesday, a Canadian study was released in the New England Journal of Medicine.
It compared Trasylol to other, cheaper alternative drugs for heart-surgery. They found that Trasylol increased the risk of death by 50% compared to to the other drugs on the market.
This means that Trasylol has pretty much hit the end of the road, as Bayer AG is taking no chances and immediately getting it away from any potential users.
It has been a popular drug throughout the 1990s, being used to reduce bleeding in heart-surgeries.
Bayer AG already notified the FDA that they would be pulling stock from the U.S. market.
Bayer will re-evaluate what they can do following another study, BART.
