FDA Defends Safety Of Bisphenol A In Plastic Baby Bottles
May 15, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration came out on Wednesday and stated that there is no reason to worry about the safety of plastic baby bottles which contain the chemical bisphenol A.
Bisphenol A, a chemical used in plastic baby bottles, water bottles, etc. has been placed under the microscope as of late due to it possibly causing developmental problems in children.
This does not appear to be the case though, as the FDA’s associate commissioner for science, Norris Alderson, testified before a Senate subcommittee about the safety of bisphenol A.
He stated that the FDA is relying on two studies which have shown that products which contain the chemical are safe.
Other studies though have shown that the chemical can cause health problems, which has caused retailers such as Wal-Mart, Toys ‘R’ Us and others to pull these products.
Congress was told that “food contact materials containing BPA currently on the market are safe, and that exposure levels to BPA from these materials, including exposure to infants and children, are below those that may cause health effects.”
