IVF Embryos To Be Tested With DNA Fingerprinting
May 15, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - As of right now, there is no way to determine which IVF embryos have the best chance to survive, putting women in a tough spot before they get pregnant. Scientists have developed a new method to test IVF embryos though, using DNA fingerprinting.
Scientists from Australia and Greece have developed a new way to test if IVF embryos will be able to survive.
Currently the usual method used is to implant multiple eggs into the womb of the women, which can sometimes result in more than one baby being born.
These scientists though believe that the DNA fingerprinting could be used to see which embryos have the best chance to turn into healthy infants.
They completed this by removing DNA from the embryos just after they were fertilized.
They can look at the characteristics of the embryos to see its chances of making it all the way.
Their study has been published in the journal Human Reproduction.
