C-Sections Increase Number Of Premature Births In US

May 29, 2008

According to a new study, the reason why there is such an increase as of late in the number of preterm or premature births in the U.S. is due to Cesarean section births, or C-sections.Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new study, the reason why there is such an increase as of late in the number of preterm or premature births in the U.S. is due to Cesarean section births, or C-sections.

Researchers from the March of Dimes and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at 9 years of data for their study.

The data came from the years 1996 and 2004, and analyzed the number of premature births which took place.

They found that there was an increase during that time of around 60,000 premature births each year.

They found though that out of all of those births, 92% were C-sections, showing the relation between the two.

The number of C-sections increased by 36% over the 9 years, compared to only a 10% increase in the number of premature births.

The majority of the premature births were born at 34 to 36 weeks, meaning they were late premature births.

Infants born premature face increased risks such as problems eating, breathing, brain development issues, and a higher risk of death compared to full-term births.
