Painkillers Aspirin, Ibuprofen Could Lower Alzheimer’s Risk
May 29, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - According to a new study, people who take popular painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen could actually cut their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
The over-the-counter painkiller medicines were found to be effective in helping lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
The research evaluated six studies involving nearly 14,000 people, with 820 having Alzheimer’s in follow-ups.
The author of the study Peter Zandi from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore stated “Our results were consistent with previous findings of a reduced risk in aspirin users, and the large sample size enabled us to show that the risk reduction was apparent in those who used aspirin without other NSAIDs.”
Research in the past has been skeptical on whether or not these NSAIDs actually cut the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
This new study has shown though that the medicines actually cut the risk by 23% when taken by people.
It is believed that these anti-inflammatory drugs help cut down on the plaque build-up in the brain, which is linked to the disease’s development.
The study has been published in the journal Neuology.
