Study Rates Hospitals In U.S., More Care May Not Be Best
May 30, 2008
San Francisco (dbTechno) - Consumer Reports has put out a study consisting of over 3,000 hospitals, ranking them on patient care, how much time they spend with patients, type of care, and so on. What they found is that more is not always better for health care.
The results were based on data from the federal Medicare program and go against what you would think of as the better treatment or care for patients.
What they found was that more is not always better. When patients receive more aggressive treatment and are in the hospital longer, they are more prone to excess exposure to hospital diseases.
They also found that more doctors can actually lead to problems with communication, diagnosis, treatment, and more.
The rankings show that certain hospitals, such as the Bay Area hospitals provided more conservative health care compared to the rest of the nation, spending less money per patient.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though based on what they found. The more aggressive care was traditionally found in city hospitals across the U.S.
More aggressive care was found to cost more, and could also cause further unwarranted issues.
