Hong Kong Gets Proactive Against H5N1 Bird Flu
June 11, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Hong Kong is beginning to get far more proactive in how it deals with the H5N1 bird flu virus after the bird flu was detected in domestic poultry for the first time in five years this week.
On Wednesday, Hong Kong ordered the slaughter of all live chickens at retail locations to try and stop the spread of the virus.
3,500 chickens in city markets will be slaughtered to try and prevent the spread of the bird flu.
Officials continue to test the 1.5 million poultry located at poultry farms and wholesalers in Hong Kong, but no bird flu cases have popped up yet.
Officials are not sure as of yet as to whether or not the infected chickens were local or if they came from mainland China.
Needless to say though inspections have stepped up greatly as these chickens will be killed on top of the 2,700 poultry slaughtered since last Saturday.
